A message from David De Silva:
The High School of Performing Arts opened in 1946. Together with the High School of Music and Art (1936) they became the first public schools to draw students from the five boroughs of New York City to a centre for professional training in the Arts. They combined in 1984 to become La Guardia High School near Lincoln Centre.
When Fame the movie opened in 1980, the High School of Performing Arts became known as the ‘Fame’ School. Since then, many ‘Fame’ schools have been established, including the New Word School of the Arts in Miami, the Baltimore School of the Arts and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington D.C. Paul McCartney was inspired to create the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts. French kids demonstrated they wanted a ‘Fame’ school in Paris.
As the creator of Fame, I know the importance of “Arts in Education” and the “special” power of that education to enrich the lives of our youth. Fame has become a global symbol of that power, particularly in the performing arts. Nothing has brought this home to me more than witnessing super-talented Swedish, Spanish, Polish, Hungarian, Japanese, Danish, Dutch, British and Australian kids ignite their stages singing and dancing in Fame the Musical.
